October 2020 VADA News
Vermont is ablaze with color this autumn! Those who were lucky enough to be attending the antiques shows here were in for a treat! The 16th Annual Norwich Antiques Show, September 19th, on the grounds of the Norwich Historical Society was a great success! It seems as if people were more than ready to get out and see great antiques in a lovely setting on a warm fall day. The turnout for the 15 dealers set up under tents exceeded expectations. The dealers were happy to be out doing what they love, and the buyers were more than happy to find a treasure or two! Vermont Antiques Week, October 2-4, normally featuring 5 shows, this year featured only 2 shows—Black River Antiques, Friday and Saturday, and Antiques at Fletcher Fields, Saturday and Sunday. Black River was the first to open, and the dealers were all set up and ready for the opening at 1:00 on Friday. Fletcher Fields opened on Saturday. Dealers’ booths were full of wonderful antiques, all presented under tents. Both shows had good attendance and dealers were pleased with their many sales. Everyone seemed happy to be out attending a show, both as dealers and shoppers. Congratulations to Steve Sherhag, the promoter, and to all the dealers who braved some chilly and often rainy, weather to put on two great shows, and thanks also to all those who shopped the shows and supported the antiques dealers. There may be fewer in-person shows to attend, but there are still shops open with wonderful antiques: Stone House, Chester; Five Corners Antiques, Essex Junction; Wigren-Barlow Arts and Antiques, Woodstock; Eric Nesbitt Antiques, Woodstock; Twin Oaks Antiques, Lunenburg; The Antiques Collaborative, Quechee; Windham Antique Center, Bellows Falls; Vintage Inspired Lifestyle Marketplace, Burlington; Sir Richards Antiques, Stowe; Hogback Vintage, Johnson; Stone Block Antiques, Vergennes; Marie Miller Antique Quilts, Dorset; Vermont Antique Mall, Quechee Gorge; Peacham Carriage Company, Peacham; Flying Pig Antiques, Westmoreland, NH; and Antiques Marketplace, Lake George, NY. Some shops may have winter hours. A call ahead is advised. This will be my last newsletter for the year. Hope you all have a safe, healthy winter and happy holidays. Look forward to being back in 2021 and to a return to the usual schedule of shows throughout the year. Be safe and stay well. Toni and Jim Stoma of Latcham House Antiques, Waterville, Ohio have been buying and selling antiques since the early 1990’s. Jim was introduced to antiques from an early age as his mother was a dealer who continued to sell until just shortly before her death at age 87. Toni’s introduction to the business began when she and Jim married. When asked why they became dealers, “Jim blames his mother; Toni obviously blames Jim”! Given that Ohio had long been a mecca for art glass and pottery, Jim first started collecting, buying, and selling art glass for a number of years while working, and then during a job layoff in the 1980’s, he began refinishing and selling furniture at a monthly show in Ann Arbor, Michigan. At this time he also discovered Brimfield and became a regular exhibitor there as well. Toni and Jim are both retired: Jim worked as a tool and die maker, and Toni worked for a major glass producer as a retirement specialist. They are both currently active in their local historical society. They exhibit at about 10 shows a year, from Ohio throughout the Midwest, as well as in Pennsylvania Texas, and New England. Toni and Jim have had a website, www.LatchamHouseAntiques.com, since 2007 and it is updated regularly. They sell a wide range of Americana and folk art. Jim deals primarily in early lighting, wall art, marine art, and other forms of folk art. Toni’s love is all forms of textiles, including hooked rugs and samplers. They both love the antiques business and like many dealers, it’s the “thrill of the hunt” that excites them, as well as meeting dealers and customers who often become friends.Currently, because of Covid-19, their show schedule has been curtailed. In August, they participated in the online Antiques in Manchester show, normally a part of New Hampshire Antiques Week. They plan on exhibiting at the Antiques at Fletcher Fields show during Vermont week and hope to participate in some of the other outdoor shows scheduled for the autumn. Stop by their booth and say hi at the Antiques at Fletcher Fields show. We were sorry to hear that Rita Masso recently had a heart attack. She is home recuperating, and we wish her a speedy recovery. The Vermont Antiques Dealers’ Association wishes everyone a beautiful, healthy Fall. Take care and stay safe. Thank you for supporting shops and dealers with your purchases. All of us in the antiques community are saddened by the cancellations of so many shows because of Covid-19. The creativity and resiliency shown by antiques dealers, show promoters, auction houses, and estate sale dealers has been nothing short of remarkable. In a short time, virtual shows, online auctions and sales, and new platforms for selling on Facebook, Etsy, and Ruby Lane have sprung up. The love of buying and selling antiques is still alive and well and finding new outlets until all the shows are back. The 58th Island Antiques Show and Sale in South Hero, scheduled for July 10th and 11th, has been cancelled. We will all look forward to attending the show in 2021. The Vermont Antiques Dealers’ Association show committee met on May 26th and decided that the show scheduled to take place during Vermont Antiques Week in October will be held online rather than as scheduled at Magic Mountain. The following letter is from Trish Koptiuch and Kyle Scanlon, co-presidents of VADA and members of the show committee. Dear Vada Members, The VADA Show Committee has been communicating regularly regarding the scheduled Antiques Week show at Magic Mountain. After much consideration by the Committee we are excited to announce that we are currently working on a plan where the VADA show will be continuing in an online-only format. This decision was based on a few key factors: -The health and welfare of all those involved, many of which are in “High Risk” groups should the contract the illness, -The success of online “virtual” shows that have taken place in the past month -The possibility of investing money and time into a “in-person” show at Magic Mountain, only to have to cancel it at the last minute. As many of you know, the outlay of money for a show is spent on advertising and securing a facility. Should VADA plan a show and have to cancel it after paying expenses, and reimbursing dealers, it would create tremendous financial hardship for the organization.
